What’s the ideal age for the first time?
You’re probably wondering what the “normal” age is to have your first time? It may seem like a lot of people around you have already lost their virginity. But did you know that everyone is different and goes at their own pace?
To remember
👉 There is no normal or ideal age to have your first sexual experience.
👉 However, there are ages of consent according to the law.
👉 The concept of virginity has evolved and become more flexible.
What is the ideal age for the first time?
It's simple: there isn't one! There’s no specific moment when you should feel the urge to experience your first time. Everyone has their own pace, history, and feelings: you're ready... when you're ready! Sometimes your body may send you signals, like desires or urges. It seems ready... but your mind might not agree yet.
Beyond the ideal age, it requires an ideal situation: are you comfortable with your partner? Is your partner comfortable with you? If statistics can reassure you, in the fifth year of high school, only 1 in 2 young people have had their first sexual experience.
You should also know that, according to the law, a person under the age of 12 is not considered capable of consenting to sexual activities (giving their agreement to have intimate contact with another person). No matter your age, it's normal to have questions about first times, and know that it's always possible to contact us to talk about it.
Am I late for my first time?
A pace shouldn’t be rushed: it should be respected. The pressure from those around you shouldn't influence you to have your first time or to take actions that make you uncomfortable. Try to make your decision without thinking about others, about what they do, what they say… or what you think they’ll say or think! How do you feel? That’s where your answer lies.

What does losing your virginity mean?
In the past, losing virginity was associated with vaginal penetration. As soon as there was penetration, you weren’t a virgin anymore. Today, virginity rather means being sexually inactive. The definition is, therefore, much more flexible and applies to both guys and girls. For some, masturbating with their boyfriend or girlfriend "counts." For others, it doesn't. But regardless of labels! What's essential is that you respect your own pace and feel good about your choices.
