100 km of Solidarity on a Unicycle for Tel-jeunes
In Gatineau, Jakob Flansberry took on an extraordinary challenge: riding 100 km on a unicycle, in the middle of winter, to support mental health and raise funds for Tel-jeunes.
A Dedicated Unicycling Enthusiast Supporting Mental Health
Jakob Flansberry is well known in the cycling community. He has been riding a unicycle for over 22 years and takes on new challenges every year—both physical and personal. For him, sport plays an essential role in maintaining balance, offering real therapeutic benefits for his mental health.
Driven by his passion and his sensitivity to mental health issues, Jakob firmly believes that staying active, pushing your limits, and building connections can truly make a difference—for yourself and for others.
Why Support Tel-jeunes?
Jakob discovered Tel-jeunes through a friend who works as a school social worker. Knowing that the organization lost part of its funding this year, he felt the need to take concrete action.
The holiday season also had a strong influence on his initiative. While often associated with joy and gatherings, it can still be a difficult time for many people—especially youth. Depression and loneliness remain taboo, and Jakob wanted to help open up the conversation. In his view, everyone goes through tough moments at one time or another, and asking for help is an act of courage.
This reality is reflected in Tel-jeunes’ data: in 2025, requests for help from youth and parents increased by 20% compared to last year. And with the usual holiday spike, Tel-jeunes surp
A Bold Challenge to Bring Smiles and Raise Awareness
On December 25, Jakob rode 100 km in a single day on his unicycle between Gatineau and Aylmer, traveling through Ottawa and Chelsea. It was a feat he had never attempted in winter before. Wearing a Santa hat on top of his helmet and smiling the whole way, he drew attention all along his route.
A unicycle never goes unnoticed, and Jakob loves the effect it has on people: sparking curiosity, bringing smiles, and creating opportunities for connection. During his breaks, he took the time to talk about his challenge and Tel-jeunes’ mission with passersby, planting seeds of awareness throughout the journey.
A Spontaneous and Heartwarming Movement
On December 21, without any specific goal in mind, Jakob spontaneously launched a fundraiser for Tel-jeunes. He was genuinely surprised by the generosity he received and by the wave of solidarity his initiative sparked: a total of $4,100 raised.
Through his action, he reminds us that one person—with an idea and a whole lot of heart—can make a real impact. Thank you, Jakob!
